Definition

A Course TagĀ  is the label applied to a course for operational or reporting purposes.

Purpose

Due to the complexity of the data the Course Tag Name attribute has not been standardized. In lieu of a data standard, these guidelines have been created to provide recommendations around the creation of a Course Tag Name to encourage consistency in data entry for this attribute. For more details on Course Tags, please see the Course Data Standard.

Guideline

The following guidelines are recommended when creating a Course Tag Name:

  1. The Course Tag name should be brief but sufficiently descriptive in order to:
    1. correctly interpret the meaning of the Course Tag, and
    2. uniquely identify the Course Tag from other similar Course Tags.
  2. Title Case is recommended for all prime words.
  3. Abbreviations should be avoided with the exception of approved acronyms. Abbreviations can obscure the meaning of a term.
  4. Special characters should generally be avoided unless they are needed for users to interpret the Course Tag name.
  5. Numerals should be avoided unless they are part of the distinctive element. (E.g., 100 Level)
